In Jerusalem, the Tachkemoni School was established in 1909 on Ethiopia Street, on the initiative of religious maskilim who wished to impart to their sons Torah with Derech Eretz, values of tradition combined with modern science and Zionist ideas. The establishment of the Tachkemuni school aroused the wrath of the ultra-Orthodox community in Jerusalem, especially the rabbis and the kollel (Jewish community) who saw it as sacrilege.

Zadok Bassan (or Basan: 1 Elul 5685, 16 August 1882 - May 26, 1956) was a Jerusalem photographer, one of the first Jewish photographers in Palestine during the Yishuv and the first Jewish photographer to be born in Israel.
