jewish judaica 1952 israel rabbi Shmuel Yohananof Death letter Bukhara jews
Samuel Cohen Yochananov was born in Bukhara in 1867 to his father Yochanan and his mother Rachel. His family immigrated to Israel in 1874 and settled in Jerusalem.
Married Rachel, the daughter of Rabbi Nissim Cohen, one of the first activists of the Jewish community in Jaffa, from a family rooted in Toledo (Spain) and later in Turkey.
He took an active part in the aliyah of Bukhara Jews to Jerusalem and was the founder of the "Rehovot" neighborhood, the Bukharan neighborhood of Jerusalem. On his promise, many immigrants entered Israel.
Shmuel and Rachel Cohen Yochananof were among the 66 founding families of Ahuzat Bayit. They built their house on 5 Rothschild Blvd. The building was two stories high, despite the fact that they were warned to settle for one floor, because of the instability of the sand dunes. Their house was the third on the boulevard.
He worked in the furniture industry and owned a furniture store in Jaffa. He was the founder of the Ohel Mo'ed Synagogue in Tel Aviv and Gabai until his death in 1952. He was also a member of the community council, the religious council, and the Hevra Kadisha.
