The German Orthodox Jewish Weekly Der Israelit appeared between 1860 and 1938. The weekly served as a platform for disseminating the views of Agudat Israel, in which the Association led the way of Orthodoxy. The newspaper was, as it defined itself, "a central journal of Orthodox Judaism." It adopted a conservative-traditional religious approach, and was a counter-reaction to Reform and liberal trends. Among its editors during its years of existence were: Rabbi Meir Markus Lehmann and his son Rabbi Oskar Lehmann, Rabbi Jacob Rosenheim, and Rabbi Selig Schachnowitz. Over time, "Der Israelit" became the most important spokesman in the field of Orthodox Jewish journalism in Germany. The newspaper featured serialized historical-fiction stories by Rabbi Meir Lehmann, intended to appeal to the youth and interwoven with allegations against the "innovators." In early November 1938, the newspaper ceased publication after the Nazi regime banned its distribution. In 1870, it merged with the journal "Yeshurun" - the titles of the first issues in the volume before us are "Jisraelit und Jeschurun" - "Jisraelit and Yeshurun", and later simply "Der Yisraelit".
