RARE Jewish Judaica 1933 Bratislava Year Book German Max Brod Stefan Zweig Text

Jüdisches Jahrbuch. Zsido evkönyv. Für das Jahr 5694 ; 1933-1934.
Spielberger, Leo (Hrsg.):
Published by Bratislava,, 1933

The Jewish Yearbook (Hungarian subtitle Zsidó Évkönyv) was a German, Slovak and Hungarian-language almanac published in Bratislava in the First Czechoslovak Republic in 1933. Edited by Leo Spielberger, the almanac contains, in addition to the calendar section, a large number of texts on contemporary debates about Jewish equality as well as essays and literary contributions, including in German by Max Brod, Stefan Zweig or by Heinrich Mann in Hungarian translation. A particular concern of the editor, who supported the Zionist movement, was to strengthen the cohesion of the Jewish communities in Czechoslovakia, which are characterized by many differences and peculiarities. Spielberger clearly condemned the anti-Semitic measures of the Nazi regime, which came to power in Germany a few months before going to press.

“Judaism is going through difficult times. But as in the past, in the present too in critical hours it takes refuge in faith, in holy doctrine, in the letters that radiate life and wisdom, in the source of knowledge from which affirmation of life can be drawn. The book has always been Judaism’s best friend.”
– Jewish Yearbook, preface to the 1933 edition.
